MSMEs and small businesses

Keep a small business’s books, registrations and operating permissions aligned as it grows.

Start with the entity and activity

MSME classification is different from legal structure. A proprietor, partnership or company still needs an activity-specific review of tax, premises, employment and sector obligations. Do not assume that a small team or turnover removes every requirement.

Use the official Udyam route

The government Udyam portal describes registration as free, paperless and based on self-declaration. Use the official portal and its authorised facilitation channels. Classification and any particular scheme benefit need their own current checks.

Prioritise the recurring records

  • Reconcile bank receipts, invoices and outstanding customer balances.
  • Retain supplier invoices and identify the terms of payment.
  • Track stock and business assets separately from personal items.
  • Keep a registration list and evidence of returns or payments.

Growth triggers another review

A new product, employee, warehouse or export customer can change the compliance worklist. For example, adding packaged retail goods to a service business introduces product and labelling questions that bookkeeping alone will not answer.

How support is scoped

Share the entity type, locations, sales channels and current records. The first workplan should separate missing historical evidence from ongoing bookkeeping and any new registration question. Professional service scope does not turn a free government registration into a government fee.

Choose the first operational priority

If the books are behind, bookkeeping and monthly close starts with a defined period and the available records. Identify missing invoices and unreconciled accounts separately from the routine work needed each month.

If cash is tight despite reported sales, cash-flow and working-capital support examines collection timing, supplier commitments and stock tied up in the business. Bring outstanding customer and supplier lists with their supporting invoices and payment terms.

For a new activity or premises, business licence assessment starts with what will happen at the site and who operates it. Share the product or service description and location rather than relying on the business’s size as the whole brief.

Turn an outstanding balance into an action

A customer balance may include an unpaid invoice, a disputed delivery and a credit note still being processed. Separate those items before using the total in a cash forecast. Assign the collection conversation, supporting-document request and accounting correction to the people who can resolve them.

A short weekly exceptions list can then show which receipts are expected, which remain uncertain and what evidence changed. This gives the owner a practical basis for discussing upcoming payments without treating every recorded sale as immediately available cash.
