Accounting and finance

Virtual CFO services

Bring finance planning and decision support into a growing business without assuming a full-time finance leadership appointment.

What the work produces

The scope can cover budgets, cash forecasts, management reviews, financial controls and investor or lender information. We establish decision owners and the quality of the underlying books before agreeing reporting commitments.

The engagement starts with a priorities list: decisions coming up, current reporting gaps, available records and the management team’s capacity to act. We translate that into agreed deliverables, a review cadence and an action register, rather than treating the service title as an unlimited list of finance tasks.

A review pack may bring together financial results, cash outlook, budget movements and open decisions. Each recommendation or scenario identifies its assumptions and the information still needed. Management approves the decisions and assigns operational actions.

Inputs to organise

  • Recent financials
  • cash and borrowing position
  • budgets
  • operating metrics
  • sales pipeline
  • funding plans
  • management priorities.

Identify who owns the books, who approves spending and who supplies sales, staffing and operational forecasts. Explain upcoming commitments, reporting expectations and known data limitations. Reconcile the starting financial position before relying on it for a new planning cycle.

If routine records are behind, agree how bookkeeping and monthly close will be brought up to date. Finance planning should make the effect of incomplete records visible instead of quietly treating provisional figures as settled facts.

What good records help you see

A profitable business can still face a cash shortfall when collections trail payroll and supplier payments. The forecast should expose that timing rather than focus only on the profit statement.

Example: management is considering a new location. The discussion can compare the proposed setup costs, staffing assumptions and collection timing with the existing business’s cash outlook. The decision record should state which assumptions are confirmed and what would change the conclusion, rather than presenting one forecast as a guaranteed result.

  1. Agree the upcoming decisions and information needed for them.
  2. Review the current management reporting and explain material movements.
  3. Update the agreed cash-flow scenarios using dated assumptions.
  4. Record decisions, owners and follow-up evidence.
  5. At the next review, compare developments with the previous assumptions and revise the plan where necessary.

Agree the boundaries

A CFO engagement is not statutory assurance, investment management or a guarantee of funding. Board and management decisions remain with the business.

Confirm the covered entities, periods, systems, deliverables and fees before work starts.

Specify the frequency of meetings, reports, availability and project work included. Clarify whether investor-information preparation, budget coordination or controls implementation is within scope. A request for urgent transaction work or a new entity may require a separate assignment.

The service name does not itself appoint a statutory officer or grant authority to sign, borrow, invest or release payments for the business. Any formal appointment or delegated authority requires its own documented assessment and arrangement.
