Financial statements preparation

Prepare financial statements from reconciled books and an identified reporting framework.

What the work produces

We coordinate closing adjustments, supporting schedules, presentation and disclosures for the agreed reporting purpose. The work records management judgements and unresolved evidence so they can be addressed before sign-off.

Begin by identifying the entity, reporting period, intended use and applicable presentation basis. The agreed pack can include draft statements, account-to-statement mappings, supporting schedules, an adjustment register and a list of disclosure information still needed from management.

We maintain the connection between the working trial balance and the statement version circulated for review. Later changes are documented so reviewers can distinguish an updated accounting figure from a presentation-only change.

Inputs to organise

  • Final trial balance
  • prior statements
  • accounting policies
  • asset and debt schedules
  • confirmations
  • contingent matters
  • related-party records.

Identify balances still under reconciliation and provide the supporting workings for estimates and adjustments. Nominate owners for information held outside finance, such as contract commitments, disputes, guarantees and significant operational changes. A disclosure checklist cannot supply facts that have not been gathered from the business.

Keep comparative figures tied to their source and explain proposed reclassifications. Where historical records need reconstruction, agree a separate cleanup scope before treating the trial balance as ready for statement preparation.

What good records help you see

A year-end bank balance alone does not establish all cash movements are properly classified. Supporting reconciliations and cutoff checks remain necessary before presentation.

  1. Agree the ledger version and review the status of supporting reconciliations.
  2. Map balances to the agreed statement headings and schedules.
  3. Record proposed adjustments with their rationale and supporting evidence.
  4. Collect management’s disclosure inputs and identify unresolved questions.
  5. Review consistency between statements, notes and supporting schedules.
  6. Hand over the agreed version with open matters and the record of changes.

Example: a loan schedule and ledger show different closing amounts. Reconcile repayments, interest entries and period timing before carrying the figure into the statements. Moving the difference to another heading would change presentation without resolving the underlying issue.

Agree the boundaries

Preparation is separate from a statutory audit or independent certification. Applicable standards, entity class and signing responsibilities are established in writing.

Confirm the covered entities, periods, systems, deliverables and fees before work starts.

Specify whether the assignment includes posting approved adjustments, preparing a particular reporting pack, supporting auditor queries or coordinating submission documents. The number of entities, comparative periods and quality of the supporting records affect the work required; they should be part of the proposal.

Management supplies complete information and approves the statements through the appropriate process. A prepared draft is not an audit opinion, signed statement or filing acknowledgement. Coordinate separate audit preparation and filing work where required.
