The question and deliverable
We organise the tax computation, book-to-tax adjustments, tax-credit reconciliation and return information for the agreed entity and year. Questions affecting the position are documented before authorisation.
Agree the taxpayer, income period and version of the financial statements before preparation. Keep the accounting result, proposed tax adjustments and unresolved positions separately identifiable. Each material adjustment should have a reason and supporting working so the computation can be explained after filing.
Evidence to prepare
- Financial statements and ledger
- prior return
- tax credits and payments
- audit reports where applicable
- deduction evidence
- foreign or special transactions.
Retain the prior-year computation and relevant carry-forward schedules alongside the current records. Reconcile tax payments and credit information to their supporting documents, noting differences that require clarification. A missing record should remain an explicit query rather than becoming an assumed claim or an unexplained exclusion.
A fact that can change the analysis
A credit appearing in tax information should be reconciled to the income and period in the books. It should not simply be accepted or omitted without understanding the mismatch.
For example, a customer’s deduction record may use a different period or amount from the corresponding ledger entry. Trace the underlying invoice, receipt and deduction evidence before deciding the treatment. The reconciliation should explain the difference and identify any follow-up with the customer.
Engagement boundaries
The return assignment does not automatically include audit, notice response or historical corrections.
The written proposal confirms the taxpayer, period, deliverables and fees. Identify any payment, response or appeal date at the start.
The handover includes the agreed computation, supporting schedules, filed-return acknowledgement and verification status where available, plus unresolved actions. Distinguish preparation, submission and verification rather than treating a draft return as completed filing. The taxpayer’s authorised team remains responsible for confirming the factual inputs and authorising the position taken.
