The question and deliverable
We identify the activity, entity, receipts and relevant period, compare the applicable alternatives and document the record-keeping and election implications. The decision is based on current conditions rather than a universal threshold shortcut.
Prepare a decision brief that separates eligibility questions from the comparison of possible outcomes. Record the facts used for each activity, the previous filing approach and any expected changes in the business. The comparison should make its assumptions visible, including missing records that prevent a reliable conclusion, rather than selecting an approach solely because the initial computation appears simpler.
Evidence to prepare
- Business activity and entity details
- receipt breakdown
- cash and digital collection records
- prior tax positions
- books
- growth plans.
Reconcile the receipt summary to invoices, collection records and bank entries, explaining transfers or other amounts that are not customer receipts. Keep the underlying collection method visible where it is relevant to the review. Prior returns and computations help establish the historical position; a bank total or the latest return alone may not explain how the business actually earned its income.
A fact that can change the analysis
A business with mixed activities should not assume that one eligible activity determines the treatment of all income. Separate the streams before comparing outcomes.
For example, a business may sell products and also earn separately contracted service fees. Prepare an activity-wise breakdown with the contracts or invoices behind each stream before asking whether a particular route applies. Where the accounts combine these receipts under one ledger heading, document the allocation method and any unresolved classification question.
Engagement boundaries
The advisory scope is distinct from return filing. Tax savings and future eligibility are not guaranteed.
The written proposal confirms the taxpayer, period, deliverables and fees. Identify any payment, response or appeal date at the start.
The handover states the option considered, the facts and period covered, unresolved conditions and the information needed by the return preparer. Agree separately who will implement the chosen approach and retain the supporting records. Revisit the analysis if the entity, activities or receipt pattern changes; a conclusion for one period should not be reused without checking the new facts.
