GST cancellation and revocation

Work out whether the task is closing a registration or responding to an authority’s cancellation.

Illustration of financial records, a ledger and a business report.

Define the GST work

We review the reason and effective date, outstanding filings and liabilities, and the route available under the applicable procedure. The records distinguish voluntary cancellation from a request to restore an authority-cancelled registration.

Prepare a chronology of the registration, notices, responses, applications and orders. Record the date and source of each event, keeping the business’s intended closure date separate from any date stated by the authority. The next step depends on that history and the actual objective: closure, restoration or a challenge requiring separate advice.

Records needed for a useful assessment

  • Cancellation application or order
  • notice history
  • return status
  • tax/payment records
  • business closure or transfer facts
  • stock and asset information.

Keep the full order and attachments together with available evidence of receipt. Reconcile the filing and payment position by period, and identify records that remain with a former accountant or authorised person. Missing access or documents should be treated as a specific recovery task, rather than a reason to guess the earlier filing position.

A transaction detail that matters

Revocation is not a universal remedy for every cancelled registration. The portal guidance distinguishes authority-initiated cancellation from cancellation requested by the taxpayer.

For example, a business closing one location may intend to continue elsewhere under other registrations. Identify precisely which GSTIN and operations are affected, together with stock and transaction records that need examination. A general instruction to close the business is not a sufficiently precise brief for a single-registration application.

What your proposal will cover

Deadlines, arrears and eligibility are assessed from the actual order. Appeals and disputed retrospective effects are separately scoped.

The written engagement confirms the GSTINs, periods, deliverables and responsibilities. Government payments and professional charges are identified separately.

The handover identifies the route taken, submitted records, available acknowledgements or orders and outstanding obligations or queries. Track application, decision and any subsequent action separately. Cancellation or restoration work should not be described as resolving every historic liability or proceeding unless that outcome is supported by the actual record.
