Food labelling and safety review

Review food artwork and supporting records before printing or launching a product.

Assessment and deliverables

We compare the label with product composition, pack size, intended audience and applicable FSSAI requirements. The review distinguishes mandatory declarations from voluntary nutrition, health and marketing claims.

You receive an annotated artwork review and an evidence-gap list. We check whether ingredients, allergens, nutrition information, date marking and business identifiers are consistent across the supplied label and product dossier.

Identify the product variants and pack formats included in the review, with a version number for each artwork file. Link every claim or declaration being assessed to its supporting product information. Keep missing evidence visible as an unresolved item rather than treating a statement repeated on an earlier label as proof that it remains accurate.

Documents to prepare

  • Final artwork and pack dimensions
  • Recipe, ingredient specifications and allergen data
  • Nutrition and shelf-life support
  • Claims, licence details and intended sales channels

Provide the recipe and supplier information that correspond to the actual product being launched. Date the supporting nutrition and shelf-life records and identify any changes since they were prepared. Where the artwork, specification and marketing brief disagree, obtain a factual resolution from the product team before carrying the wording into the final design.

A practical example

A recipe change can affect more than the ingredient list: allergen statements, nutrition values and the basis of a front-of-pack claim may also need review.

For a recipe change, create a comparison of the old and new formulation and identify the artwork elements potentially affected. Refer technical questions to the appropriate specialist and record which supporting evidence needs updating. A cosmetic revision to the ingredient panel should not close a question about the evidence behind a separate marketing claim.

Scope and responsibilities

The review is not laboratory validation or product approval. Current amendments and product-specific standards are checked for the assignment; older compendia alone should not be treated as the complete current rule set.

The engagement letter records the sites or products covered, filing assistance, query support and fees. You approve the factual application details and retain responsibility for ongoing operations.

The handover contains the reviewed artwork version, comments resolved, evidence outstanding and changes requiring further review. Agree who will compare the final print-ready file with the reviewed version, including any edits made by the designer afterwards. Completion of an artwork review does not establish laboratory validation or provide an authority’s product approval.
