The question and deliverable
We reconcile the return, tax information, payments and intimation, then distinguish a rectifiable error from a dispute requiring another procedure. The record includes the requested correction and supporting evidence.
Prepare a comparison showing the amount claimed in the return, the amount reflected in the available tax records and the amount recognised in processing. Identify each difference separately, with its supporting document and proposed next step. This avoids treating every reduction in an expected refund as the same kind of error.
Evidence to prepare
- Filed return and computation
- processing intimation
- challans
- withholding certificates
- tax-credit statement
- prior requests and orders.
Keep a chronology of the original filing, subsequent requests, acknowledgements and decisions. Use the actual documents rather than a summary of the portal status alone. Record which version of a credit statement was downloaded and when, so a later update can be distinguished from the evidence available when an earlier request was made.
A fact that can change the analysis
A missing tax credit may originate in the payer’s statement rather than the return itself. Identify the source before repeatedly submitting the same correction request.
For example, a certificate may show a deduction that is absent from the available credit statement. The working paper should identify the payer, period, amount and document supporting the discrepancy, then track any agreed follow-up with the payer. A promise to correct a statement should remain an open item until the updated evidence can be checked.
Engagement boundaries
Refund release and timing are not guaranteed. Appeals and disputed legal interpretations require a separate mandate.
The written proposal confirms the taxpayer, period, deliverables and fees. Identify any payment, response or appeal date at the start.
The handover records the route selected for the identified issue, the evidence submitted and any further action required from the taxpayer or payer. Track submission, processing outcome and actual receipt separately. If a response introduces a different issue, review that issue before repeating the original request; the existing mandate may not cover a new dispute or appeal.
Match the request to the mismatch
The Income Tax Department’s rectification FAQ distinguishes reprocessing, tax-credit mismatch correction and return-data correction. These serve different purposes; identify what was filed, what was processed and what needs correcting before selecting a request. The FAQ also distinguishes rectification from revising a return. Check the procedure available for the actual order and period rather than using rectification as a general way to change a return.
References and official procedures
Rectification FAQ consulted 2 October 2026 for request types and procedural distinctions. Its historical section references must be read in the context of the actual order and period; confirm the applicable law and time limit for the assignment.
