Chandigarh business compliance

Keep Chandigarh workplace, labour-welfare and premises records separate from neighbouring Punjab and Haryana requirements.

Identify the applicable registration or intimation

The government ServicePlus directory lists Chandigarh services for registration or amendment under the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958, and a separate business intimation under section 13-A. Determine which requirement applies to the establishment, including current exemptions and any interaction with registration under the occupational-safety framework.

The name of the underlying Act does not mean that every Punjab amendment or procedure automatically applies in Chandigarh. Check the law as extended to the Union Territory and current Chandigarh notifications before selecting the service.

Treat extended opening as a separate operating question

The service directory includes an intimation for opening a shop or establishment on a 24-hour basis. Check the applicable notification and conditions before scheduling extended hours. Registration alone does not settle employee rest, staffing, safety or other operating requirements.

Maintain wage, attendance, leave and contractor records that reflect the actual shifts worked. Keep the intimation and any conditions with the workplace file.

Assess Chandigarh labour-welfare contributions

ServicePlus lists a Chandigarh service for depositing labour-welfare contributions and unpaid wages under the Punjab Labour Welfare Fund Act, 1965. Identify coverage, employee categories, current contribution amounts and the relevant period before payment.

Keep employer and employee components and unpaid-wage records distinguishable. Construction-worker welfare and national social-security obligations are separate assessments. Do not copy Punjab or Haryana payroll deductions solely because employees commute across the regional boundary.

Check the premises use and lease conditions

Identify the Estate Office, municipal and planning requirements relevant to the property. A registered lease records the transaction but does not establish that every proposed commercial use, alteration or subdivision is permitted.

Assess building use, occupancy, fire and sector permissions before fit-out or expansion. A restaurant, clinic, paying-guest operation and ordinary office can involve different conditions even within a similar building.

Example: a Chandigarh office hiring staff from Mohali

Keep the actual workplace and employing entity clear in contracts and payroll. An employee’s home address in Mohali does not by itself turn the Chandigarh office into a Punjab establishment. Conversely, opening a separate working location in Mohali requires its own jurisdictional assessment. Track transfers and remote-working arrangements rather than relying only on the company’s registered office.

Prepare the operating file

  • Entity authority and the actual workplace address.
  • Premises rights, approved use and applicable occupancy or fire records.
  • Registration, intimation and amendment evidence under the applicable framework.
  • Labour-welfare calculations and payment records for covered workers.
  • A documented profession-tax and social-security applicability assessment.
  • A schedule of changes, renewals and responses to authority queries.
